De documentaire Bassweight van Suridh Hassan, die op vrijdag 4 juli in Melkweg Cinema vertoond wordt, biedt een uniek beeld op één van de spannendste opkomende dancestromingen: dubstep. 5 days off heeft wereldwijd de eerste vertoning van de eerste volwaardige documentaire over dubstep, waarin diepte-interviews te zien zijn met alle belangrijke artiesten in het veld: van Skream en Benga tot Kode 9, Plastician en BBC1 DJ Mary Anne Hobbs. Ook zijn er beelden opgenomen tijdens een eerdere editie van Sonic Warfare in de Melkweg. Aansluitend Q&A met de regisseur en producent onder leiding van Juha van ‘t Zelfde (Viral Radio).
Een «dapper festival» dat volgend jaar terugkeert

Met de sluiting van 11 hebben we op het laatste nippertje nog het Viral Radio Festival kunnen organiseren. Zowel het Bimhuis als 11 was voor een maandag goed bezocht. Foto’s zijn onder meer hier en hier te zien. Recensies staan hier en hier. De artiesten zijn allemaal te vinden via Last FM en MySpace, maar Cinnaman en Juha zullen ze ook blijven draaien in de komende Viral Radio’s.
Zij die er geweest zijn willen we bedanken voor hun komst. De rest hopen we gauw tegen te komen bij de volgende feestjes en concerten.

The Bug en Ricky Ranking vervangen King Midas Sound
Op het laatste moment hebben we toch een afzegging: King Midas Sound heeft door het drukke schema helaas geen volwaardige show kunnen voorbereiden. Het spijt Kevin Martin ontzettend dat hij niet met Roger Robinson kan optreden. In plaats daarvan zal hij met zijn andere project The Bug komen, bijgestaan door Ricky Ranking (bekend van o.a. Roots Manuva). Dit zal gelijk een album release feestje worden van London Zoo, dat binnenkort op Ninja Tune verschijnt.
Eerste Viral Radio Festival volgende week
Maandag 23 juni is de eerste en laatste keer dat het Bimhuis en 11 zullen samenwerken. Het Viral Radio Festival is een ode aan het Oostelijk Havengebied, met een geschiedenis van jungle en triphop op Drum Rhythm, techno en dubstep in 11 en elektronica en experiment in het Bimhuis. Het Viral Radio Festival toont experimenten in beats ‘n bass, met een line up met grote namen als Moritz von Oswald, Vladislav Delay, Kode9 en the Bug. Zij zullen gesteund worden door Icarus, Take, Pete Concrete, Samiyam, Zomby, Ikonika, Darkstar, Martyn, Ras G en Black Salt Candy.

Viral Radio Festival 2008
Viral Radio has been around since early 2007, covering dubstep and experimental bass music on Dutch public radio station Lijn5.com. With guest appearances by Goth Trad, Kromestar, 2562, Quest and Cyrus, and interviews with Kode9 & the Spaceape, Rob Smith (RSD/Smith & Mighty) and Pinch, the show has closely monitored the many faces of recent dubstep.
It has been invited to host a room at the Paradiso in Amsterdam during Volt, and it has organised two events at club 11 in 2007 and 2008, with artists as Rhythm & Sound, Pinch, 2562, Peverelist, Kromestar, Mala, RsD, Cinnaman, FS Green, Cyrus, Rustie and U Dub.
With the arrival of Cinnaman as co-host alongside Juha (U Dub), Viral Radio is adjusting its focus and widening its scope to present the whole spectrum of contemporary electronica and experimental beats.
Together the two hosts will present the newest brain-tingling electronic music to dance and not dance to, from Alog, Hudson Mohawke and Icarus to Kode9, Flying Lotus and Zomby.
To celebrate one year of bass and beats experimentation, Juha and Cinnaman have set up the first Viral Radio Festival, on Monday 23 June 2008 at the Bimhuis and 11 in Amsterdam. With a line up consisting of a large group of the most idiosyncratic beats and bass producers from London, Berlin and Los Angeles, this festival wants to connect club and concert hall, body and brain, the extravertive and the introspective.
At the Bimhuis, Berlin vanguard musicians Moritz von Oswald, Vladislav Delay and Max Loderbauer (the Moritz von Oswald trio) will be joined by the British post-jungle freetronica pioneers Ollie Bown and Sam Britton (Icarus) in their exploration of rhythmstructures and synthesised sound. L.A. based Take and Dutchman Pete Concrete will play beats in the bar.
At 11, Hyperdub heavy weights Kode9 and King Midas Sound will bring the next generation of bass ‘n bleeps producers Zomby, Darkstar and Ikonika from London, with Ras G and Samiyam adding some L.A. love, and Dutch producer Martyn injecting his technodub.
The Viral Radio Festival will take place at the Bimhuis between 9 pm and 1 am, and at 11 between 11 pm and 5 am. This will be the first and only time these two venues will collaborate, as 11 is closing that week. Tickets will be available online and at designated presale points. Fee: 10 euros (Bimhuis) and 12 euros (11), and 15 euros (festival pass).
